Recovery codes, a new phone and turning two-step off
Use a recovery code when your phone is not with you, make a fresh set of 10, move two-step sign-in to a new phone, or turn it off.
When you set up two-step sign-in you saved 10 recovery codes, like K7QX5-M2PL9. Each code signs you in once
without your phone.
Sign in with a recovery code
- Sign in with your email and password as usual.
- On the Two-step sign-in step, press Use a recovery code instead.
- Type one of your saved codes and press Verify and sign in.
That code stops working. A message tells you how many are left, for example Recovery code used. 7 left. When 3 or fewer are left, make new ones.
Make a fresh set of codes
- Open My account. Recovery codes shows how many of the 10 are unused (red at 3 or fewer).
- Press Make new codes. The Make new recovery codes window says Your old codes stop working at once.
- Type the six-digit code from your authenticator app and press Make new codes.
- Save the 10 new codes with Download .txt, Copy or Print, tick I saved my recovery codes somewhere safe and press Done.
Move two-step sign-in to a new phone
If two-step sign-in is optional for you:
- While you still have the old phone, open My account and press Turn off next to Turn off two-step sign-in.
- Type the code from the old phone (or a recovery code) and press Turn off.
- Press Set up two-step sign-in and scan the new QR code with the new phone. See Set up two-step sign-in.
If two-step sign-in is Required for you, it cannot be turned off. Ask your agency owner (or a colleague whose role manages the team) to reset it; you set it up on the new phone at your next sign-in.
Turn two-step sign-in off
Only possible when nobody requires it for you.
- In My account, press Turn off next to Turn off two-step sign-in.
- The window Turn off two-step sign-in? warns: Anyone with your password could then sign in.
- Type the six-digit code from the app. If the phone is lost, press Lost your phone? Use a recovery code and type a recovery code.
- Press Turn off. The message Two-step sign-in is off appears.
Your remembered devices and recovery codes are removed too.
If something goes wrong
- That recovery code is not right or was already used.: each code works once. Try another saved code.
- Turn on two-step sign-in first: new codes exist only while two-step sign-in is on.
- Type a code from your app or a recovery code: the box was empty when you pressed Turn off.
- No codes left and no phone: see I lost the phone with my authenticator app.
