Connect SMS

Send trip page codes and short reminders by text message through Twilio or any SMS gateway that accepts a web address.

How toUpdated

Connect SMS so that trip page codes, account sign-in codes and short reminders reach the customer's mobile. Until you do, text messages are only written to the message log.

Before you start

  • Your role must allow changing settings.
  • One of these:
    • a Twilio account: the Account SID, the Auth token and a sender number (or a sender name where your country allows it);
    • an SMS gateway from a local provider that sends a message when the system opens a web address. You need that address, with places for the number and the text.

Steps

  1. Open Settings → Connections and find the SMS card.
  2. Turn on the switch Use this connection on the card.
  3. In Provider, choose Twilio or Any SMS gateway (HTTP).
  4. Fill in the details:
    • Twilio: Account SID, Auth token and Sender number or name.
    • Any SMS gateway (HTTP): URL with {to} and {text}, for example https://gateway.example.com/send?to={to}&text={text}. The system puts the mobile number in place of {to} and the message in place of {text}. Choose GET or POST in GET or POST, as your provider says. If the provider wants a key in a header, type it in Headers as JSON, for example {"Authorization":"Bearer …"}.
  5. Press Save. The message SMS connection saved appears and the card shows Connected.
  6. Type a mobile number with the country code, for example +973 3900 0000, in the box at the bottom of the card.
  7. Press Send a test and wait for Sent. Check that it arrived.
  8. Check that the text arrived on the phone.

After you connect SMS

  • Trip page codes, account codes and every SMS template go out by text message, in the customer's language.
  • Each message appears in Settings → Data and logs → Message log with Sent or Failed.
  • Text messages count towards your plan's monthly SMS limit. Sign-in codes always go out.
  • Only messages that have an SMS template are sent by SMS. See Message templates.

Note

Sent means the provider accepted the message. If the phone did not receive it, check the delivery report in your provider's dashboard: the number may be wrong, or the sender name may not be approved in that country.

If something goes wrong

  • The SMS gateway address must start with https:// or The SMS gateway address is not a valid web address when you save: copy the full secure address from your provider.
  • The SMS gateway address must be a public internet address: the address points to a private network.
  • It did not work: The provider refused the sign-in details. Check the user name, password or keys. The Account SID, the Auth token or the key in the headers is wrong.
  • It did not work: The server did not answer. Check the host, the port and the TLS switch. The gateway did not answer within 15 seconds.
  • It did not work: The provider returned an error. with Gateway answered … under it: the gateway refused the message with that code. Check the address, the method and your balance with the provider.
  • Not sent: this channel only keeps a log. Pick a real provider to send messages. The provider is still Do not send, keep a log.
